In Ephesians 1:13, Paul speaks of Jesus Christ, in Whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your salvation: in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. After we have placed our faith in what the Lord Jesus did to accomplish our salvation, the Holy Spirit sets His seal upon us. Adam Clarke gives a good comment regarding this work of the Holy Spirit. “It was customary among all nations, when a person purchased goods of any kind, to mark with his seal that which he had bought, in order that he might know it, and be able to claim it if mixed with the goods of others.” Well, indeed! The Holy Spirit sets the seal of God’s Kingdom on those who come to God by the grace offered in Christ Jesus.
Recently, as Brother Henry Washington and I were traveling in ministry, we had occasions to be among people of the world. We found, in place after place, that the Holy Spirit Himself was pleased to be the seal set upon us. We marveled at the fact that it was nearly as easy to minister to people in restaurants and shops as it was in the churches. Because of the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit with us, people were nearly always ready to hear what we had to say of the Good News of Jesus Christ.
I wonder—is it the presence of the Holy Spirit with us, and in us, that becomes the seal placed upon us?
DEAR FATHER, I praise You—Oh, I praise You!—for sending Your Spirit to abide with us. Please keep close watch upon my soul so that not one thing comes within me to grieve Him. As the government of Your Kingdom rules in me, let the power of Your Spirit subdue me and keep me under the control of Your Kingdom. I ask this because the desire to be planted by the Lord Jesus, as a child of Your Kingdom, is growing within me.
